Online Learning: A Blessing in Disguise

Online learning is a challenge. But it was a blessing in disguise for Ming, a young adult with disability, who joined Poiema last spring.

The transition online was not easy at first. Ming had not attended any Poiema meetings before the pandemic, and was worried about getting along with others. As he slowly warmed up, his transformation was obvious to other parents and program participants.

“Before the pandemic, I never knew how much Ming actually understood the things he learned in class,” said Mrs. Hong, Ming’s mother. “Thanks to the online Poiema program, I was able to observe how my son learned. His learning ability exceeded my expectations! Not only does he take notes and actively ask questions, his memory and creative thinking has improved. Ming is always sharing with us what he learned that day in class, and has an even better understanding of the Bible stories than I do. I am so grateful that Ming has transformed into such a cheerful and outgoing person.”

The two-hour daily online Poiema program has become a constant source of support for many young adults with disability. Because the program transitioned quickly from in-person to being online, the participants were able to join consistently and it has given them a space to thrive. Together, they learn Bible lessons, exercise, cook and listen to presentations.

“Seeing Ming’s growth has been a joy,” Rosalie, PTC’s Disability Services Facilitator, expressed. “Ming is attentive to Bible lessons and observes repetition in verses we study that I didn’t see. He always listens, takes notes and processes the lesson after our Zoom session through drawing or writing. We’re amazed how Ming enthusiastically shares Jesus with family and friends who visit!”
