Love Serve Witness

Our Mission

Pui Tak Center was established by the Chinese Christian Union Church to be a Christian witness to Chinese in Chicago through educational, family and community services.

Our programs focus on serving the 30,000 Chinese living in the Greater Chinatown community which includes Armour Square (Chinatown), Bridgeport, McKinley Park, Brighton Park, Canaryville and South Loop communities.

Pui Tak Center has three program departments: Adult Education and Training, Children and Youth, and Community. Through these programs, we impact the lives of over 2,500 people each year. We help people improve their English, get better jobs, become citizens, catch up and excel in school, prepare for college, receive help with daily problems, deal with immigration issues and adjust to life in the US. We partner with the Chinese Christian Union Church so that many hear the Gospel that gives hope and meaning.

In Chinese, “pui tak”means to develop character or cultivate virtue.

Our Story

In 1993, the Chinese Christian Union Church purchased the former On Leong Merchant Association Building, Chinatown’s only historic landmark building, from the federal government. CCUC was looking for more space for its own ministries but also wanted to further its long-time commitment to Chinatown. Since its founding in 1915, CCUC had served its community through English classes, tutoring programs, Chinese School, a volunteer medical clinic and Chinatown’s first preschool which is now Pui Tak Christian School. At the dedication of Pui Tak Center in 1995, the Chicago Sun-Times wrote that the “Chinese Church Gives Landmark a Rebuilt Image.”

Pui Tak Center’s theme verse is Mark 10:45 – “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Jesus’ life and teaching models a servant heart ministering to both our spiritual and physical needs.
