Adult Tutoring

Pui Tak Center in Chicago’s Chinatown hosts about 500 adult students studying English, and many of these students apply for 1-on-1 tutors who are volunteers in our community.

Our volunteer tutors come from all walks of life, from college students to retirees. One thing they have in common is a desire to reach out to their community in a personal way, to touch one person’s heart with the love of Christ. Most of our students are Chinese immigrants who need English for their jobs and for daily life situations, and they greatly appreciate the opportunity to talk with English speakers.

Become a Volunteer Tutor

We invite you to consider the opportunity of helping a student with their English conversation skills and making a difference in a person’s life. Fill out this form to get started.

Applicants go through an orientation to tutoring ESL, are given resources for tutoring, and are then matched with a student at a time that is convenient for both. Volunteers can choose to meet their students either remotely online or in person at Pui Tak Center. We ask for a weekly commitment of 1-2 hours a week over a period of at least 4 months.

For Current ESL Students: Sign Up for English Tutoring

You must be enrolled in a Pui Tak Center ESL class to receive tutoring. Ask your teacher how you can enroll.

The Pui Tak Adult ESL Tutoring Program offers 1-1 tutors for registered Pui Tak students that are in levels 2-5. You can spend 1-2 hours a week with an English speaker and work on speaking, listening, grammar, job search – whatever you tell them you want to do, they will try to help you. Many of our 1-1 tutors are college students and others are people from our community who would like to reach out to Chinese immigrants. It’s a great opportunity to make a friend from our Chicago community! We also offer small group classes in Conversation, Phonics, and Service Industry on Saturday mornings.
