Support Group

A Support Group for Parents of Children with Developmental Disabilities – God is love! He watches over the weak and the oppressed. The Bible says, “God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong” (1 Cor. 1:27). Through the New Immigrant Services Department of Pui Tak Center, we came in contact with many families of children with developmental disabilities. We realized the challenges these immigrant families encounter every day due to language barriers as well as the predicament of raising their children. These families are marginalized by society through the judgmental and discriminatory attitudes toward them. Hence, in November 2011, Pui Tak Center established a support group for the families. We chose the name “1 Corinthians 1:27” to signify our goals:

  • Helping the families to establish a network to support each other.
  • Enabling parents to:
  1. learn parenting skills to nurture their children with special needs.
  2. understand the education system of special education and other related resources in Chicago.
  3. be an advocate for the rights of their children.
  • Promoting understanding and acceptance for people with disabilities in the Chinese community.

We serve families of children with developmental disabilities, including autism, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities etc.

Children with disabilities and their siblings are welcome! Childcare is provided and held concurrently with the parents meeting. For more information, contact Wai Yi Louie at or 312.328.1188 x218.
