We must make quick decisions everyday. Often, the fast choices we make are just little things such as responding to questions like, “Do you have the time, and what time does the bus get here, or would you like fries with that?” We don’t think twice about the questions we hear, or the words we read daily in newspapers, on buses, or on the internet. Often, we think of public conversations and reading the paper as at most enlightening, and at the very least inconsequential. However, imagine a world where being asked a question about bus schedules or food orders would be overwhelming and at the very least intimidating. This is the world of many of the ESL students we serve. . The ESL adult tutoring program serves Chinese adult immigrants in large ways with seemingly “small tasks”. Paired one to one with a tutor, adult students are given the chance to ask difficult questions about the English language and living in the U.S. However, we believe the process of learning is never one-way. Students bring more than questions about English grammar, they also bring rich life experiences and personal stories that hold deep significance to all of us in the program. A person experiences growth when he/she learns how to interact with others. The adult tutoring program seeks to provide an interactive learning environment where students and tutors can learn from each other and grow together.
